Hi All
You may have seen a link on the XCWeather page to a product called
Mobiletide. Its not always there so if you want to take a look the link is
http://www.mobiletide.co.uk
Essentially, Mobiletide is a 70KB Java applet that sits on your mobile and allow you to predict tides more or less anywhere in the world. It comes with a database of locations and as you would expect it allows you to add your own. Interestingly St. Andrews is not there, but Gott Bay on Tiree is! The interface is graphical so you can see when high and low tides are and you can also see if the tide is coming in or going out. Best of all you can predict tides by changing the date and time. Those of you with scientific training will know that this is no big deal, but its still impressive.
To add your own location you need two pieces of information, 1) The date of the full moon for any given month (a list of these is given on the website) and 2) The time of the high tide on that day. A link to a free service called EasyTide is available from the website. If you want to go there directly the link is
http://easytide.ukho.gov.uk/Easytide/Ea ... onLength=7
Mobiletide also comes with a graphical moon phase calculator which is interesting and possibly useful for astronomers.
You'll need a reasonably modern phone with WAP and Java (obviously!) Download is by a WAP link which is sent to you on receipt of payment. Be warned that depending on traffic, the link can take up to an hour to come through. Dan at Mobiletide was very accommodating -- I had problems with an old version of Java on my Alcatel and a frozen SIM/locked account on my newish Samsung. None of these problems were his, but he agreed to keep sending the link until I finally got it installed on the Samsung.
Overall I've been very impressed with it in the couple of days I have had to play with it.
Best of all, its available for a one off payment of £5 which has got to be worth it.
Finally, there is a demo on the website for you to try before you buy.
Disclaimer: Although it might seem like it, I have absolutely no affiliation with the company.
