Kite size dilemma 4 Years, 11 Months ago
So Planning a wee sesh at West Sands today, however it looks according to XC that the wind my get up to 30mph, which for a noob like me is a bit much for my V16 or too much in general, I could use the V10, but then at 14 1/2 stone will probably be quite underpowered for the start of the sesh where it is only it is only supposed to be about 21mph - perfect for the V16.

Change kites mid session I her you say, that may be the answer, but I really don't want to get stuck on the water with the V16 if he wind gets up rather quickly.

.......maybe i should just landboard instead?

Ha ha, if you think like that dude then you will never get out kitesurfing! Why not kitesurf with the appropriate sized kite to start with and if the wind picks then you can pull your safety - you may even have time to get off the water and have someone catch it. Wind wont go from 21mph to 30mph instantly so you'll have time to sort yourself out. Also dont be phased by high wind speeds at west sands - the water flows quickly (normally south to north) and the waves will also kill a lot of your speed / kite power. If its going to be as windy as forecasts predict then there will be quite a few folk out today.

go for the 10m!

when learning you really wont want to be totally maxed out!

even if the 10m isnt quite enough at the start you could still use it to get a feel for what your trying to do and when it picks up you will have a better shot at it.

well that was interesting!

what happened to the kite dawson?

i was out for maybe 30mins max and it was pretty damn gusty and the sea state was really difficult. the stength of the rip was pretty amazing too.

we ended up tyring to surf for the hell of it, 2 foot mush being really blown off and a 6'11'' (i think) wasnt ideal :undecided:

thanks soooo much for the cup of sugar'y tea geoff, was a real life saver.

Me3, the best way to learn things is to take the cautious approach. Start small and build yourelf up. Mistakes are more costly when more power is involved, remember all of the power that the kite produces transfers into YOU. And if you land badly, all that power has the potential to DAMAGE YOU, so the bigger the kite, the more power, the more potential for DAMAGE (if you crashout). Once ur more experienced you know when to quit, so you can get away with holdin more power ...

I been kitesurfing for 4 years and unless its gusty conditions (in which case a beginner like Rixtar shouldnt be out) then the wind does not go from steady 21mph to steady 30mph instantly. In gusty conditions, yes of course it can. If wind is stable and laminar then it will progressively become stronger and you will have time to react - ie get off water and land kite if needs be before it becomes too strong for the kite you are flying.

Dawson - my mate Swiss found your kite at Leuchars. He had to go looking for his board and stumbled across the kite - hope its not damaged - make sure you connect up properly next time dude coz that coulda been really dangerous if other kites were involved!

have to agree with joe in that its pretty rare for the wind rto increase that much instantly. the only time that sort of stuff really happens is if there is something completely different going on with the weather like a huge front or something but you should have an eye out for stuff like that. on the other hand if you are unsure which kite to use, its often a good idea to er on the side of caution and go for the smaller one
