TOPIC: Beginner Boards

Beginner Boards 3 Years, 8 Months ago
Looking at getting out on the water at some point and considering getting a board. I am 85kg (200lb or so).

Does anyone have an tips for what i should be looking for? sizes? models? etc not looking to spend a fortune on a new board, something to get started with and will do up to intermediate level.

I came across a Jimmy Lewis Santa cruz Caution Hustler 145x 46 which as far as i have read is a fairly good size to learn on as is planes easily and would should be ok for my weight. (not sure what the price is yet, anyone know how much a second hand in good condition should be?)

comments/suggestions welcome

I was gonna start a new topic on the exact same thing, beginner boards. What are the differences between beginner boards and expert boards? I see the smaller boards are generally better in stronger winds but why? Also would like some recommendations as to boards that are suitable for a 14 stone bloke, also want it to plane early work in winds from 10 knots. Any boards spring to mind, oh and cheepish please.

This link has some good info on the aspects of buying a board and the differing types you get. http://secure.session1.com/index.php?cPath=253_402

I am a beginner at this so anyone should feel free to correct me. Most advice given to me seems to be around a 140 to 145 x 40ish (I’m around the 15 stone mark) would be good to learn on and allows for some progression. I would think a twin tip around the 140x40 mark would be good starting place. I’ve been told that larger than this and you will outgrow it unless you plan to get 2 boards (a small one higher wind days).

People also say get out and try different boards if you can, I’m sure there are some people who would be willing to let you have a shot and see how you get on. I have just got a cheap 130 (cant remember the width) gastra mutant board (courtesy of Dave getting a new board ) ) Probably a little bit small to start on but can’t complain too much as it was cheap. More than happy to let you have a shot.

I’m sure some of the more experienced kite surfers will be able to advise with more info.

I'm no expert but I have a flexi 130x41. it gets up and planing really easy. Although it isn't a light wind board for me.
A wider board should be better for beginners tho was recommended that 140 is about as long as you'd need.

I am 90kg but prob nearer 100kg with all the gear on and used a litewave tsunami 133x41 to learn on. Progress was hampered slightly and i could have done with a bigger board in the lighter winds but i am still using it 18 months down the line.

You need to get a board suited to the local conditions as well. At troon with head high chop at times Crazyfly and Nobile boards seem popular.

If you buy too big you will struggle to hold a line in higher winds and most go for 2 boards (low wind / high wind) or one board that sits in the middle but will not go as early as a low wind board

Thats what i was thinking sw67, 2 boards. Have a large beginner one now, then use this as a light wind board later. I will try to borrow a mates then keep my eye on ebay for some bargains.

But cheers for all the advice guys.
